Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III (1993)
The four turtles travel back in time to the days of the legendary and deadly samurai in ancient Japan, where they train to perfect the art of becoming one. The turtles also assist a small village in an uprising.
What people think about Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III is the kind of exuberant, slightly scruffy sequel that wins you over by committing fully to its wildest idea: dropping four wisecracking heroes into a storybook version of samurai-era Japan and letting the culture clash spark both comedy and earnest adventure. The movie’s charm comes from how it balances kid-friendly swashbuckling with genuine camaraderie—there’s a warm, old-school “family matinee” vibe to the action, the jokes, and the way the Turtles rally around ordinary people caught in extraordinary circumstances. It’s not the slickest or darkest TMNT outing, and the rubber-suit ’90s aesthetic can feel quaint, but if you’re in the mood for an upbeat time-travel romp with swords, slapstick, and a surprisingly sincere heart, this one is easy to like. Watch it when you want comfort-food entertainment that doesn’t pretend to be more than it is, and ends up being better for it.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III is clearly trying to shake up the formula by tossing the gang into a fish-out-of-water samurai adventure, keeping things kid-friendly and breezy. The problem is the time-travel story feels thin and repetitive, and the movie leans hard on loud, pushy music and bright, cheesy production design that makes the whole thing look cheaper than it should. The action is serviceable but rarely exciting, and the performances and humor are uneven enough that it can feel like a Saturday-morning episode stretched to feature length. If you’re mainly here for nostalgic Turtle banter and a harmless family outing, you might get by, but if you want the sharper charm or grit of the earlier films, this one will probably test your patience.
