Striking Distance (1993)

Striking Distance is the kind of sweaty, blue-collar thriller they don’t make much anymore: a pulpy, fast-moving ride that turns Pittsburgh’s rivers into a moody, working-man’s labyrinth of danger and dark humor. It has a terrific sense of place—bridges, barges, and barroom banter give the movie a lived-in authenticity—while the direction keeps the suspense humming with the confidence of a solid genre craftsman. Bruce Willis brings an edge of bruised stubbornness that fits the story’s cop-family tension, and the waterway setting gives the action an adventurous, off-the-beaten-path flavor. The mystery isn’t the most intricate you’ll ever see, but if you want an entertaining, tightly paced ’90s crime thriller with personality and a strong Pittsburgh pulse, this one hits the spot.

Striking Distance clearly wants to be a gritty, river-soaked cop thriller with a personal vendetta, a serial-killer hook, and a blue-collar Pittsburgh vibe you can almost smell. The problem is it plays like a checklist of early-’90s clichés, with twists that feel more dutiful than clever and a pace that too often coasts instead of tightening the screws. If you need sharp mystery writing, memorable characters, or a lead performance that really sells the obsession, this may feel flat and oddly mechanical. Still, the riverside setting and occasional procedural beats give it a pulpy, late-night cable watchability—just don’t expect it to rise above “serviceable.”
