Joseph Vilsmaier stages the battle with a grim, immersive clarity—smoke, rubble, and winter closing in—while the performances (especially Thomas Kretschmann and Dominique Horwitz) keep pulling you back to the fragile bonds between men who can’t afford to be sentimental. The vibe is unflinching and bleak, yet never empty; even in the mud and ruin, it finds flashes of decency that make the surrounding horror hit harder.
