Sniper (1993)

Sniper stands out because it treats marksmanship like a nerve-ending discipline rather than a superhero trick, building tension from patience, distance, and the terrible finality of a single shot. Luis Llosa drops you into a sweaty Panamanian jungle where every leaf can hide a threat, and the movie’s pleasures come from solid, workmanlike craftsmanship: clean staging, tactile action mechanics, and a steady drip of adrenaline instead of empty noise. Tom Berenger brings weary authority as a veteran who’s seen too much, while Billy Zane makes his new partner’s confidence feel earned and fragile, giving their uneasy teamwork real bite. The story is lean and the violence can be harsh, but if you want a gritty, no-nonsense ’90s thriller that understands how suspense is manufactured, this one hits the target.

Sniper wants to be a tense, boots-in-the-mud two-hander about a battle-hardened Marine and a talented rookie learning what combat really costs, and on that level Tom Berenger and Billy Zane do bring a decent clash of egos. The problem is it often confuses “patient” with “slow,” spending long stretches on jungle trekking and waiting around that don’t build enough suspense to justify the downtime. The action you do get is competently staged and occasionally punchy, but the story is pretty thin and the middle can feel like it’s treading water. If you’re after a high-adrenaline thriller or clever military drama, you’ll likely be bored; if you can tolerate a languid pace for a few solid sniper set pieces and a gritty, old-school vibe, it’s passable.
