Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit (1993)

Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit is the kind of crowd-pleaser that earns its cheers the old-fashioned way: by letting a roomful of underdogs find their voice and then turning that discovery into pure, contagious joy. Whoopi Goldberg slips back into Deloris with effortless charm, and the film wisely shares the spotlight with a young, hungry ensemble—most notably Lauryn Hill—whose raw talent gives the musical numbers real lift instead of mere nostalgia. The vibe is sunny, mischievous, and big-hearted, full of classroom chaos that gradually clicks into a sense of community you can feel in every rehearsal and harmony. It’s a little formulaic and squeaky-clean in that early-’90s PG way, but if you’re even slightly susceptible to feel-good comedies that build to a rousing musical payoff, this one is easy to love.

Sister Act 2 is clearly trying to bottle the first film’s feel-good magic by swapping the convent for a struggling school and using music as the “save the day” engine, and on that level it’s harmless, upbeat comfort viewing. The problem is it runs on a very familiar, paint-by-numbers formula, with conflicts that feel conveniently arranged and a sentiment dial that’s turned a bit too high to feel earned. If you’re hoping for the original’s spark and surprise, this one can come off like a softer, more manufactured encore rather than a true follow-up. Still, Whoopi Goldberg’s charisma does a lot of heavy lifting, and the choir sequences (including an early showcase for Lauryn Hill) are the main reason to show up.
