Short Cuts (1993)
Many loosely connected characters cross paths in this film, based on the stories of Raymond Carver. Waitress Doreen Piggot accidentally runs into a boy with her car. Soon after walking away, the child lapses into a coma. While at the hospital, the boy's grandfather tells his son, Howard, about his past affairs. Meanwhile, a baker starts harassing the family when they fail to pick up the boy's birthday cake.
What people think about Short Cuts
Short Cuts is special because it turns a sprawling web of everyday lives into something riveting, funny, and quietly devastating, the way great short fiction can suddenly feel like a whole universe. Robert Altman’s direction has a jazzy, lived-in flow—scenes overlap, conversations collide, and you start to sense the hidden currents connecting strangers long before the film ever underlines them. The acting is uniformly terrific, with performers catching the messy, human contradictions that make these characters feel less like “stories” and more like people you might actually know. It’s a long, adult, morally curious hangout of a movie—if you want neat closure, it may frustrate you, but if you like cinema that watches life with empathy and bite, it’s hard to beat.
Short Cuts is clearly aiming for a sprawling, Altman-style mosaic of everyday people colliding in messy, sometimes darkly funny ways, and it nails that lived-in, overlapping-chatter realism. But if you want a clean plot, clear emotional payoffs, or characters you can instantly latch onto, this can feel long, scattered, and oddly underwhelming—more like drifting through other people’s bad weeks than watching a story build. The tone leans bleak and matter-of-fact, which some read as honest and others experience as shallow or just plain depressing. Watch it if you’re in the mood for a patient, ensemble snapshot of human frailty; skip it if you need momentum, closure, or a single narrative thread to hold onto.
