Jeffrey Lau keeps the energy cranked to “hyperactive,” but there’s real craft underneath—the fights are nimble, the timing is sharp, and the film’s candy-colored style turns every scene into a punchline with choreography. Leslie Cheung, Brigitte Lin, and Maggie Cheung ride the madness with total commitment, selling both the spoof and the swagger so it never collapses into mere noise. If you want a straight-faced, honorable wuxia epic, this isn’t it; but if you’re on the fence and craving something deliriously inventive and joyfully unhinged, it’s the kind of movie that wins you over by sheer momentum.
