Point of No Return (1993)

Gabriel Byrne brings a cool, unnerving authority as her handler, while the film’s Los Angeles interludes add a surprising ache as Maggie brushes up against the possibility of an ordinary life. It’s not for viewers who want subtle, low-key action or gentler material—this is R-rated, hard-edged entertainment—but if you’re on the fence and crave an intense, stylish cat-and-mouse ride, it delivers.

The problem is it often feels like a studio exercise in hitting the beats rather than a movie with its own pulse, so the training-and-assassination arc can come off more mechanical than gripping. If you’re sensitive to “been there, seen that” crime-thriller plotting or you need your action to feel raw and surprising, this may register as derivative and oddly bloodless despite the R-rated violence. Still, Badham keeps the pacing tidy, Gabriel Byrne brings a cool menace as the handler, and the romantic subplot gives the story a human pressure valve—just don’t expect it to leave much of a mark.
