John Singleton gives the film a lived-in, sunbaked ‘90s L.A. vibe, mixing streetwise humor and raw edges with unexpected pockets of tenderness, and he lets Janet Jackson’s quiet, wounded strength carry the story like a heartbeat under the dialogue. Then Tupac Shakur comes in with a magnetic sincerity that makes their push-pull chemistry feel less like movie banter and more like two souls testing the temperature of trust. It’s not for viewers who want a breezy love story—the language is rough and the pain is close to the surface—but if you’re open to a romance that earns its softness, this one lingers.

Poetic Justice is clearly aiming for a soulful, character-driven road romance about grief, healing, and Black love, with poetry used as a window into Justice’s inner life. The problem is it often feels more like a collection of moods and moments than a properly shaped story, with a loose structure and uneven pacing that can make the emotional beats land only intermittently.
