Needful Things (1993)

Needful Things is the kind of Stephen King adaptation that doesn’t just scare you—it grins while it does it, turning small-town pettiness into a wickedly entertaining pressure cooker. Max von Sydow is superbly unsettling as Leland Gaunt, selling desire with a velvet voice and a shark’s patience, while Ed Harris grounds the madness with a weary, human decency that makes the escalation hit harder. The film’s pleasure is in its macabre, darkly comic energy: it’s less about monsters in the shadows than the way a few “harmless” choices can light a whole community on fire, with plenty of jolts along the way. It’s not for viewers who want subtle horror or a clean, restrained tone—this one gets loud, nasty, and R-rated—but if you like your chills served with cruel humor and big, pulpy momentum, it’s a devilish good time.

Needful Things wants to be a slow-burn small-town morality tale where temptation spreads like a virus, and on paper that’s classic Stephen King territory. In practice, the movie often feels overlong and repetitive, with the “one more person makes a deal” structure dragging the pacing and making the escalation to chaos feel more mechanical than gripping. The dark humor can land awkwardly, and if you’re expecting a sharp, scary descent into madness, you may find the tone oddly flat and the payoff less satisfying than the setup promises. That said, Max von Sydow brings real menace and charm, and if you enjoy talky, old-school thrillers about petty grudges turning toxic, you might still get your money’s worth.
