Matinee (1993)

Matinee is special because it turns the simple act of going to the movies into a full-blown, joyous event—part nostalgia trip, part coming-of-age story, and part loving valentine to the glorious hokum of B-horror. Joe Dante captures that early-’60s mix of innocence and anxiety with a light touch, letting the Cuban Missile Crisis hum in the background while the theater becomes a place where fear can be transformed into laughter and wonder. John Goodman is irresistible as the larger-than-life showman who understands that a little illusion, delivered with panache, can feel like salvation, and the film’s warmth sneaks up on you between the jokes and rubber-suit thrills. If you don’t have any affection for old-school monster movies or small-town Americana, it may not hit as hard—but if you’ve ever loved the communal magic of a crowded theater, this one’s a treat.

The problem is that the film’s ambitions start to sprawl: it juggles a lot of side characters and threads, and the nuclear-paranoia parallel can feel more like a concept than a story with clean momentum. If you want a tight, consistently focused comedy-drama, the pacing and occasional plot fuzziness may test your patience. But if you’re happy to soak in nostalgic theater magic, rubber-suit monster antics, and a warm-hearted vibe even when it gets a bit messy, it’s an easy enough hang.
