Last Action Hero (1993)

Last Action Hero is the kind of big, boisterous studio swing we don’t get enough of: an action spectacle that’s also a witty love letter to the movies, gleefully poking at genre clichés while still delivering the explosions, one-liners, and swagger you came for. John McTiernan stages the mayhem with real craft, and Schwarzenegger is in peak form—both as the unbreakable cop and as a knowing presence in the joke—while the film keeps a surprisingly heartfelt pulse through a kid’s grief-fueled devotion to the screen. The vibe ricochets between candy-colored fantasy, sharp Hollywood satire, and sincere crowd-pleasing adventure, making it feel like a blockbuster that’s in on its own myth. It’s not for everyone if you want your action straight-faced or your comedy subtle, but if you’re game for an ambitious, self-aware ride, it’s an underrated blast.

Last Action Hero is clearly trying to be a loving, clever takedown of action-movie clichés while still delivering the explosions and one-liners, and on paper that’s a great idea for Schwarzenegger at his peak. The problem is the movie can’t quite decide if it wants to be a sincere crowd-pleaser, a satire, or a kid-friendly fantasy, so the tone whips around and the story can feel busy, noisy, and oddly unfocused. If you want a clean, straightforward 90s action ride, this self-aware, meta approach may come off more chaotic than smart, with jokes that don’t always land and set pieces that don’t build smoothly. Still, McTiernan stages some solid action, Schwarzenegger is game, and if you enjoy genre in-jokes and don’t mind a messy structure, there’s fun to be had.
