The Slingshot (1993)

What makes The Slingshot special is how it turns a scrappy boy’s survival instincts into something both funny and quietly heartbreaking, painting 1920s Stockholm with the texture of lived-in streets and hard choices. Åke Sandgren balances bruising realism with flashes of impish humor, letting Roland’s homemade schemes and small rebellions feel less like “plot” and more like a kid inventing dignity in a world determined to take it away. Jesper Salén is terrific as Roland—tough, vulnerable, and always thinking two steps ahead—while Stellan Skarsgård and Basia Frydman give the family a warmth that makes every setback land with real weight. It’s not a comfort watch if you’re sensitive to cruelty toward children, but if you want a humane coming-of-age story that finds resilience without pretending life is fair, this one earns its glow.

The Slingshot is clearly aiming for a gritty, compassionate coming-of-age portrait of a boy squeezed by poverty, prejudice, and a cruel school system in 1920s Stockholm, and the performances and period detail do a lot of the heavy lifting. The problem is the filmmaking often feels oddly flat and TV-movie plain, so moments that should hit like a punch can land like a list of miseries being checked off. It’s also relentlessly downbeat, with a “catalogue of catastrophes” vibe that can feel more draining than illuminating if you’re not in the mood for bleak realism. If you’re looking for momentum, tonal variety, or a more cinematic touch, this may try your patience—but if you can tolerate slow pacing for solid acting and social commentary, there’s value here.
