Indian Summer (1993)
A group of childhood friends, now in their thirties, reunite at Camp Tamakwa. Only a few of the original campers show up, but they still have a good time reminiscing. The people share experiences and grow while at the camp. They are dismayed to discover that the camp's owner, Unca Lou, is going to close the camp down.
What people think about Indian Summer
Indian Summer is one of those rare grown-up comedies that earns its warmth: it doesn’t just trade on nostalgia for camp songs and old pranks, it uses that setting to gently sneak up on the ways people change—and the ways they don’t. Mike Binder lets the week unfold with an easy, lived-in rhythm, giving the ensemble room to be funny, vulnerable, and unexpectedly honest, while Alan Arkin’s Unca Lou presides like a gruff guardian of everyone’s better memories. The vibe is relaxed and bittersweet, full of lake-air humor and late-night conversations that feel like the kind you only have when you’re back where you started. If you want big plot twists or sharp-edged satire, this isn’t that kind of movie—but if you’re in the mood for a charming, humane reunion story that leaves you a little lighter, it’s a lovely time.
Indian Summer is clearly aiming for a warm, grown-up slice of nostalgia: old friends back at a beloved summer camp, old wounds resurfacing, and a gentle push toward second chances. The problem is it often plays like a checklist of reunion-movie beats—romantic complications, life-lesson speeches, and tidy emotional turns—so if you’re allergic to sentimentality or clichés, this will test your patience. The tone can feel uneven, bouncing between comedy and earnest drama without the sharp writing needed to make either really land. Still, there’s an easygoing charm to the camp setting and a likable, grounded presence from the cast (especially Alan Arkin), so it works best as low-stakes comfort viewing rather than anything particularly memorable.
