Bille August directs with conviction and scale, letting the romance and heartbreak unfold in sweeping, novelistic strokes while Meryl Streep brings an uncanny calm to Clara’s otherworldly presence and Jeremy Irons gives Esteban the kind of imposing authority that’s riveting even when it curdles into cruelty. The vibe is lush, passionate, and haunted—part intimate melodrama, part historical storm—always reaching for something bigger than the moment. It isn’t for viewers who want subtle minimalism or a tidy, gentle ride (there’s some harsh violence and emotional brutality), but if you’re on the fence and crave a courageous, visually ambitious epic that takes big swings, this one has a pulse you can feel.
