Hot Shots! Part Deux (1993)
Topper Harley is found to be working as an odd-job-man in a monastery. The CIA want him to lead a rescue mission into Iraq, to rescue the last rescue team, who went in to rescue the last rescue team—who went in to rescue hostages left behind after Desert Storm.
What people think about Hot Shots! Part Deux
Hot Shots! Part Deux is the kind of fearless, machine-gun comedy that doesn’t just parody action movies—it practically detonates them, then uses the shrapnel for sight gags. Jim Abrahams keeps the pace so brisk and the frame so densely packed with jokes that even a throwaway background detail can land a laugh, while Charlie Sheen plays Topper Harley with a straight-faced sincerity that makes the absurdity feel weirdly heroic. The vibe is gleefully juvenile and relentlessly inventive, bouncing from macho-war-movie swagger to cartoon lunacy without ever pausing to catch its breath. If you don’t enjoy rapid-fire spoof humor or you’re sensitive to raunchy, over-the-top bits played for comedy, it may not be your flavor—but if you want 86 minutes of pure, escalating silliness, it’s a minor miracle of comedic momentum.
Hot Shots! Part Deux is trying to be a nonstop parody machine, gleefully mashing up Rambo-style war heroics with absurd slapstick and rapid-fire pop-culture jokes. When it’s on, it’s genuinely funny—Charlie Sheen plays it straight enough to sell the stupidity, and Lloyd Bridges is a walking punchline in the best way. The problem is the hit-to-miss ratio: the film throws so much at the wall that you’ll feel the dead air between gags, and the story exists purely as a clothesline for increasingly wacky bits. If you don’t enjoy broad, juvenile humor (including a very over-the-top sex gag) or you need your comedy to build rather than just barrage, this may feel more exhausting than hilarious.
