Ghost in the Machine is the kind of lean, high-concept techno-horror that takes a simple modern fear—your home turning on you—and cranks it into a pulpy, crackling thrill ride. Rachel Talalay treats the electrical grid like a haunted house, staging inventive set pieces where everyday gadgets become suspense engines, and the early-’90s effects have a scrappy, ambitious “wizardry” that’s oddly charming even when it’s a little rough around the edges. Karen Allen gives the movie a grounded center, making the terror feel personal rather than just mechanical, while the film’s mean streak keeps the tension humming. It’s not for everyone—especially if violence involving a child and an animal is a dealbreaker—but if you like your sci-fi thrillers nasty, imaginative, and wired straight into the anxieties of the digital age, this one has a jolt to it.
