Walter Hill directs with intelligence and restraint, letting the tension build through moral pressure as much as action, while the photography makes the frontier feel less like a backdrop than a living force. Wes Studi’s Geronimo isn’t a mythic caricature but a fiercely human presence, and the film’s commitment to Native American actors lends the story a weight that many earlier Hollywood versions never earned. It’s not a crowd-pleasing shoot-’em-up—more a revisionist, elegiac drama with bursts of urgency—but if you want a Western that looks gorgeous and leaves you thinking, it’s well worth the ride.
