Steve Kloves stages the story with patience and nerve, letting the wide-open landscapes and long silences build a dread that feels earned, while Dennis Quaid gives Arlis a wounded decency you can’t help but root for. Meg Ryan is surprisingly grounded and tough as the woman who offers him a real chance at tenderness, and James Caan brings a chilling, lived-in menace that makes every scene feel like a bad memory returning. It’s not for viewers hunting a fast, twisty thriller, but if you want atmosphere, strong character work, and suspense that tightens like a vise, this one lingers.

Flesh and Bone is aiming for a brooding, Southern-gothic character study where trauma, fate, and romance collide, and you can feel Steve Kloves reaching for something somber and literary. The problem is it often plays more like a carefully posed mood piece than a story that actually moves, with deliberate pacing, slightly mannered dialogue, and twists you can see coming long before the characters do. If you need emotional warmth, sharp momentum, or tight plotting that doesn’t lean on coincidence, this will likely feel cold and frustrating rather than haunting.
