Father Hood (1993)
Deadbeat dad kidnaps his kids from the bus to an abusive foster home and they go on a run. The cops are after them, they bicker constantly and his idea of a way out is grim, yet this dangerous ride might just turn them into a family.
What people think about Father Hood
Father Hood is the kind of overlooked, road-chase crowd-pleaser that sneaks up on you: part action romp, part bickering family comedy, and quietly, a redemption story carried on sheer momentum. Patrick Swayze gives a spirited, likable performance that keeps the movie in congenial company even when the situation turns tense, and the film’s sunlit landscapes and constant motion make it feel like a fast ride you’re happy to stay on. It balances laughs with real stakes without getting preachy, letting the rough edges and wrong turns land as part of the charm. If you’re looking for a polished, sentimental family film this may feel a little scruffy, but if you want a breezy, good-hearted ’90s getaway with strong performances and a surprising warmth, it’s well worth the trip.
Father Hood is clearly aiming for a scrappy, feel-good “unlikely family bonds on the run” comedy with a bit of action and heart, and it does have a few moments where the messy father-kid dynamic lands. The problem is the movie wants you to buy into a pretty extreme setup while giving you a thin script and dialogue that rarely surprises, so the chase and bickering can start to feel repetitive rather than tense or funny. If you need believable character choices, sharp jokes, or anything that sticks with you after the credits, this will likely feel like filler. But if you’re in the mood for a lightweight, early-’90s road/chase romp and don’t mind a lot of contrivance in service of sentiment, it’s passable.
