Coneheads (1993)
A pair of aliens arrive on Earth to prepare for invasion, but crash instead. With enormous cone-shaped heads, robotlike walks and an appetite for toilet paper, aliens Beldar and Prymatt don't exactly blend in with the population of Paramus, N.J. But for some reason, everyone believes them when they say they're from France.
What people think about Coneheads
Coneheads is special because it commits, with straight-faced confidence, to one of the silliest premises ever smuggled into suburbia—and then finds real warmth inside the weirdness. Dan Aykroyd and Jane Curtin play their extraterrestrial parents like a loving sitcom couple from another galaxy, letting the humor bloom from deadpan manners, baffled neighbors, and a surprisingly sharp little satire of assimilation and American normalcy. The vibe is cheerfully anarchic rather than edgy: oddball visual gags, goofy set pieces, and a gentle heart that keeps the film from feeling like a stretched sketch. It won’t convert you if you dislike broad ’90s comedy, but if you’re on the fence, it’s the kind of oddity that wins you over by being both absurd and oddly sincere.
Coneheads is trying to stretch a silly Saturday Night Live sketch into a warm, fish-out-of-water suburban satire, with Dan Aykroyd and Jane Curtin committing hard to the deadpan weirdness. The problem is the joke doesn’t evolve much, so you get a lot of the same “they don’t fit in” bits repeated until the movie starts to feel longer than it is. If you’re expecting sharp sci-fi comedy or a tightly written plot, this can come off as crude, thin, and a bit desperate, even when it’s aiming for charm. But if you like broad ’90s goofiness, oddball physical comedy, and don’t mind a premise that runs on nostalgia and commitment rather than cleverness, it has a few genuinely funny moments and an oddly sweet family core.
