Cliffhanger (1993)

Cliffhanger is the kind of big, physical action movie that earns its thrills the old-fashioned way: real heights, real peril, and set pieces that make your palms sweat even from the couch. Renny Harlin turns the Colorado Rockies into a ruthless playground, where every icy ledge and gust of wind feels like an active participant, and Sylvester Stallone is perfectly cast as a bruised hero clawing his way back from guilt with grit and sheer endurance. The film’s vibe is lean, tense, and satisfyingly straightforward—part survival ordeal, part cat-and-mouse chase—punctuated by John Lithgow having a wickedly fun time as a cultured villain who’s all smiles until the mountain bites back. It’s not for viewers who avoid hard-R violence or intense falls, but if you want a propulsive, old-school thriller built on suspense and audacious stunts, this one still delivers.

Cliffhanger is trying to be a lean, high-altitude rollercoaster: big stunts, nasty villains, and Stallone doing bruised-hero survival action against a spectacular mountain backdrop. When it sticks to the climbing set pieces and physical jeopardy, it’s genuinely tense and entertaining in that loud, old-school ‘90s way. The problem is the story and character work are pretty flimsy, the villains veer into cartoonish, and the movie asks you to swallow a lot of convenient nonsense just to keep the mayhem moving. If you need smart plotting or believable behavior, you’ll be rolling your eyes; if you just want snowy scenery, brutal fights, and shameless action melodrama, it delivers exactly that.
