CB4 (1993)
A "rockumentary", covering the rise to fame of MC Gusto, Stab Master Arson, and Dead Mike: members of the rap group "CB4". We soon learn that these three are not what they seem and don't appear to know as much about rap music as they claim... but a lack of musical ability in an artist never hurts sales, does it? You've just got to play the part of a rap star...
What people think about CB4
CB4 is a gleefully sharp “rockumentary” that doesn’t just parody gangsta rap—it lovingly skewers the whole machinery of image-making, hype, and selling a persona, and it’s still funny because the targets haven’t gone away. It plays like a confident mock documentary with the timing of a great sketch show, packed with quotable bits and a winkingly catchy musical vibe that understands the genre well enough to tease it. Chris Rock and company keep the energy high and the satire pointed without turning mean, letting you laugh at the absurdity while recognizing why it worked. If you enjoy comedy that’s a little raunchy and very of-its-era, CB4 is a cult gem that earns its status by being smarter—and sillier—than it has any right to be.
CB4 is trying to be a mockumentary takedown of rap-image marketing and fame-for-sale, and you can see the intention to poke holes in the whole “play the part and cash the checks” machine. The problem is the satire often feels mushy and unfocused, with a slapdash, formula-driven plot that keeps interrupting the comedic momentum instead of sharpening it. If you want tight, incisive parody with escalating cleverness, this can come off underheated and a bit shallow, like it’s coasting on the premise rather than fully exploiting it. Still, there are scattered funny moments and a few performances that sell the joke, so it may work best if you’re in the mood for a loose, uneven comedy rather than a razor-edged one.
