The problem is it often plays like a sprawling highlight reel of gang and prison beats: long, sometimes shapeless, and more interested in tough-guy posturing than in a clean, purposeful story. The violence and melodrama are front and center, so if you want subtle character work or a tightly plotted crime drama, this can feel exhausting rather than powerful. If you’re in the mood for raw, operatic ’90s crime drama with some memorable moments (and you can tolerate the excess), it may land; otherwise, it’s easy to see why people bounce off it.
