Beethoven's 2nd (1993)

What makes Beethoven’s 2nd such an easy yes is how it doubles down on the purest kind of family-movie pleasure: a big-hearted dog, a household already on the brink of chaos, and then—inevitably—a whole stampede of puppies that turns everyday life into a warm, goofy adventure. The comedy is broad and physical in the best way, with Rod Daniel keeping the pace lively while Charles Grodin’s wonderfully exasperated dad energy grounds the mayhem in something recognizable and sweet. There’s a lightly cartoonish villain in Debi Mazar and just enough stakes to keep you rooting for the Newtons without ever getting mean-spirited, making it ideal comfort viewing. If you’re allergic to slapstick or prefer subtler humor, it may feel noisy, but if you want a genial, kid-friendly sequel with extra charm and extra fur, it’s hard to resist.

Beethoven’s 2nd is trying to double down on the first movie’s appeal: big, messy family chaos, a lovable dog, and a clear-cut villain you can boo without thinking too hard. The problem is it plays like a louder, more cartoonish rerun, with a thin, predictable story and jokes that mostly land if you’re watching with young kids who just want puppies doing cute things.
