Another Stakeout (1993)
A pair of immature detectives are joined by a pesky assistant district attorney in staking out a lakeside home where an important Mafia trial witness is believed to be heading.
What people think about Another Stakeout
Another Stakeout is the kind of easygoing ’90s cop comedy that knows exactly what it’s selling: a comfortable mix of bickering buddy chemistry, low-stress laughs, and just enough crime-movie momentum to keep the night moving. Richard Dreyfuss and Emilio Estevez slip back into their mismatched groove with the relaxed confidence of actors who can make a throwaway line land, and Rosie O’Donnell adds a welcome jolt of energy as the third wheel who refuses to stay in the background. Director John Badham keeps the tone breezy even when the guns come out, so the action feels more like a playful spike in the rhythm than a grim detour. It’s not for viewers hunting a fresh mystery or sharp-edged realism, but if you want a genial, undemanding stakeout movie that’s happy to just entertain you, this one delivers.
Another Stakeout is clearly trying to recapture the easy, bickering-buddy charm of the first film while tossing in a louder action-comedy plot and a third wheel in Rosie O’Donnell’s no-nonsense ADA. The problem is the script feels like a rerun that’s been stretched to feature length: the stakes are there (mob hitman, witness in danger), but the plotting is thin and the jokes often land with a forced, sitcomy thud. If you’re hoping for sharp banter, clever surveillance hijinks, or a sequel that justifies its existence, this one may test your patience—especially if “immature detectives” isn’t your idea of endearing. That said, Dreyfuss and Estevez still have flashes of chemistry, and if you’re in the mood for a breezy, early-’90s cop comedy with mild peril and low demands, it can pass the time.
