Alive (1993)

Alive is the rare survival film that doesn’t chase thrills so much as earn them, turning an unthinkable true story into something bracingly human, spiritually resonant, and quietly awe-inspiring. Frank Marshall films the Andes with stark, punishing beauty, while the ensemble—anchored by Ethan Hawke and Josh Hamilton—makes you feel the camaraderie, fear, and stubborn hope without ever slipping into melodrama. The tone is sober and respectful, refusing to sensationalize the hardest choices even as it keeps you gripping the edge of your seat with sheer momentum and moral weight. It is intense and at times deeply upsetting, so it’s not for everyone, but if you can handle its harsh realities, it rewards you with a portrait of endurance and grace that lingers long after the snow stops blowing.

Alive is clearly aiming to honor an astonishing real-life survival story, leaning hard into endurance, teamwork, and a “keep going” spirit that’s easy to respect. The problem is that Frank Marshall packages it in a fairly conventional, inspirational-disaster-movie shape, so the characters can feel more like representative types than deeply textured people, and the pacing sometimes drifts between major crises. It also asks you to accept a polished Hollywood version of prolonged starvation and trauma, which can feel emotionally simplified even when the events are horrific. If you’re looking for a psychologically granular, morally complicated survival film, this may leave you wanting—but if you can meet it where it is, the crash-and-rescue arc is competently staged, the performances are earnest, and the sheer situation still lands with grim force.
