The Days of Being Dumb (1992)
Two losers who'll do anything to try and be successful in the Triad world, but all they've accomplished is having a bad luck reputation.
What people think about The Days of Being Dumb
The Days of Being Dumb is a breezy, affectionate send-up of Hong Kong triad mythology, the kind of comedy that knows the genre’s tough-guy poses so well it can puncture them with a grin instead of a sneer. Tony Leung Chiu-wai and Jacky Cheung make a wonderfully mismatched duo, selling every ridiculous setback with timing, warmth, and the sort of chemistry that turns “two hopeless wannabes” into people you can’t help rooting for. The vibe is gag-driven and good-natured, mixing playful action beats with a steady stream of jokes that work as both parody and pure crowd-pleasing silliness. If you want a hard-edged crime saga, look elsewhere—but if you’re in the mood for something light, charming, and consistently funny, this is a terrific antidote.
The Days of Being Dumb is clearly aiming for a scrappy, underdog romantic comedy set against the Triad world, leaning hard on two hapless would-be gangsters whose bad luck becomes the running gag. If you enjoy broad, chaotic humor and don’t mind jokes circling back to the same beats, you may find it charming in a low-rent, high-energy way. But be warned: some of the comedy can feel repetitive, and there’s a second-act plot point that many viewers now find outlandishly offensive and badly dated, which can sour the whole experience if you’re sensitive to that kind of “it was a different time” material. Also, if you’re coming mainly for Jacky Cheung, you might end up wishing he’d just break into song instead of carrying scenes.
