Under Siege (1992)

Under Siege is the kind of lean, confidence-in-its-craft action thriller that turns a battleship into a steel labyrinth of suspense, where every corridor feels like it could erupt and every plan has a pressure point. Andrew Davis directs with crisp momentum and a terrific sense of geography, so the tension builds cleanly instead of getting lost in noise, and the movie even finds room for sly, stress-cutting humor without deflating the stakes. The real secret weapon is the villainy: Tommy Lee Jones and Gary Busey bring such vivid, unpredictable personality to the takeover that you’re not just watching explosions, you’re watching a clash of wills. It’s undeniably a hard-R, early-’90s ride—violent, profane, with a brief nude moment—so it won’t be for everyone, but if you want a tightly engineered “one man vs. an entire ship” crowd-pleaser, this one still fires on all cylinders.

The problem is it’s also extremely formulaic, and once you’ve seen a couple of this era’s siege movies, you can predict the beats well before they land. Steven Seagal plays it cool to the point of flat, so if you need a lead with warmth or vulnerability, you may end up watching mainly for Tommy Lee Jones and Gary Busey chewing scenery and injecting the personality the film sometimes lacks. If you want a lean, old-school action ride with R-rated violence and a few dated choices, it’s solid; if you’re after real suspense, character depth, or a strong finish, this one may feel like it coasts.
