Sketch Artist (1992)
A sketch artist for the police helps a witness recall who she saw leaving the scene of a murder, and discovers that the person is his wife. Not willing to believe she was responsible, he resketches the pictures so they don't look like her, and he begins his own investigation of the murder.
What people think about Sketch Artist
Sketch Artist is the kind of better-than-it-has-any-right-to-be TV thriller that hooks you with a deliciously neo-noir premise and then tightens the screws with real craft. Jeff Fahey anchors the film with a convincingly human performance—smart, anxious, and stubborn in a way that makes the moral fog feel lived-in rather than gimmicky—while the direction keeps things slick, shadowy, and steadily suspenseful. The vibe is late-night noir: clean pacing, tense conversations, and that nagging sense that every “helpful” detail might be a trap. It’s not for viewers craving big-budget spectacle or nonstop action, but if you want an overlooked gem with a strong hook and a satisfyingly grim atmosphere, this one’s easy to recommend.
Sketch Artist wants to be a tense moral thriller about loyalty, denial, and how far someone will bend the truth to protect the person they love. The hook is strong, but the execution often feels made-for-TV in the least flattering way: slow pacing, a shaky chain of logic, and a mystery that telegraphs its turns long before it earns them. If you need genuine suspense, escalating danger, and a plot that holds up under scrutiny, this may test your patience and make the talent involved feel oddly underused. Still, if you’re in the mood for a low-key, early-’90s crime watch with an intriguing setup and a few solid character moments, it can pass the time.
