The problem is the film can’t always balance its tones: brutal apartheid violence sits next to crowd-pleasing musical numbers in a way that can feel smoothing, even jarringly “showy,” when you want the drama to land harder. If you’re looking for a rigorously grounded political drama, this may feel too simplified and uneven, but if you can accept the musical framing as a rallying cry rather than realism, there’s still plenty of passion and purpose here.
