Pet Sematary II (1992)

Pet Sematary II is the rare sequel that doesn’t try to outdo the original’s dread so much as crank up the volume on its pulp energy, turning grief and adolescent rage into a nasty little roller coaster. Mary Lambert leans into a heightened, comic-book mean streak—big effects, big emotions, and a mythic “don’t cross that line” hook that keeps daring the characters (and you) to look again. Edward Furlong gives the teen angst real bite, and Clancy Brown is memorably volcanic, the kind of larger-than-life menace that makes the movie perversely fun even when it’s being cruel. It’s not for viewers who want subtle, slow-burn horror, but if you’re in the mood for an entertaining, hard-R creature-feature with a bruised heart and a wicked sense of momentum, this one delivers.

Pet Sematary II wants to be a meaner, nastier riff on the first film’s “grief has consequences” idea, swapping slow dread for a louder, more comic-book escalation of bad decisions and worse resurrections. The problem is the script feels like it’s sprinting from one grisly set-piece to the next without earning the emotion, so the characters often come off as thin vehicles for gore rather than people you care about. If you’re looking for atmospheric Stephen King-style unease or coherent storytelling, this will likely feel sloppy, blunt, and more gross-out than scary. That said, Clancy Brown brings a memorably unhinged menace and there’s a scrappy early-’90s creature-effects charm—just know you’re signing up for cruel violence and shock moments, not subtle horror.
