Passenger 57 (1992)

Passenger 57 is the kind of lean, midair thriller that understands its own assignment: keep you trapped in a metal tube at 30,000 feet with a hero who’s smart enough to outthink the danger and tough enough to meet it head-on. Wesley Snipes brings a cool, bruised charisma to John Cutter, making his every move feel earned, while Bruce Payne’s silky menace gives the film a villain you love to hate without tipping into cartoon territory. Director Kevin Hooks keeps the pacing tight and the action cleanly staged, so the suspense builds in satisfying beats rather than noisy chaos, and the airplane setting turns every aisle, galley, and cargo hold into a pressure cooker. It’s not a subtle film and it is very much a 1990s R-rated action ride, but if you want a brisk, crowd-pleasing hijack thriller with a star in full command, this one delivers.

Passenger 57 is trying to be a tight, midair Die Hard riff built around Wesley Snipes’ cool-headed charisma and a simple “wrong plane, wrong guy” hook. The problem is the script leans hard on action clichés and convenience, with plot turns that feel more like checkboxes than earned tension, and dialogue that can land a bit corny even when the stakes are supposed to be deadly serious. If you need airtight logic, fresh twists, or villains with real depth, this will likely feel routine and a little silly. But if you’re in the mood for a brisk 90s thriller with solid momentum, a satisfyingly hissable bad guy, and Snipes doing what he does best, it can still deliver as a no-frills time-killer.
