Noises Off... (1992)
Hired to helm an Americanized take on a British play, director Lloyd Fellowes does his best to control an eccentric group of stage actors. With a star actress quickly passing her prime, a male lead with no confidence, and a bit actor that's rarely sober, chaos ensues in the lead up to a Broadway premiere.
What people think about Noises Off...
Noises Off… is a rare comedy that understands farce like a finely tuned machine: every slammed door, missed cue, and misplaced prop clicks into place with the kind of escalating precision that makes you laugh harder the more it teeters toward disaster. Peter Bogdanovich shoots the theater world with loving clarity, letting the ensemble’s immaculate timing do the heavy lifting as Michael Caine’s increasingly frazzled director tries to keep order among performers who are equal parts talented, insecure, and gloriously unmanageable. The vibe is buoyant, frantic, and wonderfully physical—slapstick with brains—where dialogue and movement dance together until the whole production becomes a high-wire act. It’s not for anyone who dislikes broad, bedroom-farce innuendo or chaos-as-a-craft, but if you want a comedy that builds and builds until it feels like it might burst, this is a delight.
Noises Off... is trying to bottle the manic joy of live farce by letting you watch a doomed production implode from rehearsal to backstage to onstage, and on paper it’s a terrific idea with a game cast. The problem is that what’s razor-sharp in a theater can feel oddly airless on film here: the pacing drifts, the framing devices slow the momentum, and the comedy sometimes lands like you’re watching someone explain a joke rather than deliver it. If you don’t already enjoy door-slamming farce, repeated gags, and escalating chaos, this may feel labored instead of hilarious. Still, Carol Burnett and Denholm Elliott commit hard, and when the backstage mayhem finally clicks, you’ll get flashes of the brilliantly engineered disaster it wants to be.
