Newsies (1992)
A week in the life of the exploited, child newspaper sellers in turn-of-the-century New York. When their publisher, Joseph Pulitzer, tries to squeeze a little more profit out of their labours, they organize a strike, only to be confronted with the Pulitzer's hard-ball tactics.
What people think about Newsies
Newsies is special because it turns a scrappy slice of New York history into a full-throated, big-hearted musical rally cry—one that feels like a classic Hollywood crowd-pleaser with 1990s snap. Kenny Ortega fills the screen with athletic, eye-filling choreography and songs that make the sidewalks and alleys of 1899 Manhattan feel like a stage built for underdogs, while Christian Bale anchors it all with a star-making mix of swagger and sincerity. The vibe is exuberant and inspirational even when it brushes up against real hardship, so you get both the thrill of spectacle and the satisfaction of watching kids find their voices. If you’re allergic to earnest, old-school musical sentiment, it may be too sunny for your taste—but if you want a rousing, family-friendly movie that leaves you humming and cheering, this one earns its standing ovation.
Newsies is clearly trying to turn a real, ugly slice of labor history into a rousing, underdog crowd-pleaser, with big emotions and bigger dance numbers. The problem is the execution can feel clunky: the tone swings between gritty exploitation drama and shiny Disney musical, and the pacing drags when it should be building momentum. If you’re coming for a truly great, consistently catchy musical or tight historical drama, this may feel like a well-intentioned misfire that never quite finds its “magic.” That said, Christian Bale brings earnest charm, the production has energy, and if you can accept the rough edges, the film’s pro-kid, anti-bullying spirit still lands.
