Innocent Blood (1992)

Innocent Blood is the kind of gleefully unclassifiable genre cocktail Hollywood barely makes anymore: a vampire movie that crashes headfirst into a gangster picture, then winks at you while the blood splatters. John Landis keeps the pace jazzy and mischievous, letting the comedy bubble up from the absurdity of criminals facing something far worse than the law, while still delivering satisfyingly grisly, old-school makeup effects that don’t pull their punches. Anne Parillaud gives Marie a cool, seductive edge with an oddly principled streak, and the mob-world performances (especially the larger-than-life energy in the gangland orbit) make the whole thing feel like a midnight-movie party with fangs. It’s not for the squeamish or anyone allergic to sleaze—there’s strong gore, profanity, and notable nudity—but if you want a stylish, high-wire blend of horror, crime, action, and dark romance, it’s a wickedly fun bite.

Innocent Blood is trying to mash up a vampire thriller with a gangster movie and a cheeky romantic angle, and on paper that’s a deliciously trashy idea—especially with a vampire who only feeds on scumbags. The problem is John Landis never quite gets the tone to behave: it lurches between comedy, crime, and gore in a way that can feel awkward rather than clever, and the pacing gets sluggish just when it should be tightening the screws. If you’re coming for a sharp, coherent story or characters you’ll actually care about, this may leave you cold, and the heavy sex/nudity plus very graphic violence isn’t exactly a casual watch. Still, Anne Parillaud brings real presence, and if you’re in the mood for a messy, effects-forward cult oddity with a wild premise, you might enjoy the ride despite the bumps.
