Hero (1992)

Hero is special because it turns the idea of “doing the right thing” into a sharp, funny, and surprisingly thoughtful ride—one that understands how messy people are and how easily the world decides who gets celebrated. Dustin Hoffman is terrific as a scruffy, down-on-his-luck guy whose split-second act of courage collides with his worst instincts, and the movie milks that tension for both big laughs and real poignancy. The writing has a witty, satirical bite about media-made myths, but it never forgets the human longing underneath: to be seen, to matter, to be better than your past. If you like comedies with a cynical edge and a warm heart, this underrated gem is an easy recommendation—though if you prefer your heroes uncomplicated and your morals tidy, it may feel a little too sly for comfort.

Hero is clearly aiming for a feel-good, media-satire redemption story: a screw-up does the right thing, and the world promptly turns it into a circus. The problem is it can’t quite decide whether it wants to be sharp and cynical or warmly sentimental, so the tone wobbles and the pacing drifts when it should be building momentum. Some plot turns lean pretty hard on coincidence, and a few characters are pushed so broad they may grate rather than amuse. If you like ’90s crowd-pleasers with a big heart and don’t mind a bit of mush and implausibility, it’s got charm and a solid central hook; if you want tight storytelling and consistent satire, this may test your patience.
