Far and Away (1992)
A young free-spirited Irish woman from an affluent Protestant family spontaneously befriends a street-smart commoner cheated by her family’s hostile land takeovers. They escape to America, ready to take advantage of the 19th century Oklahoma land rush.
What people think about Far and Away
Far and Away is the kind of big-hearted, old-fashioned Hollywood epic that sweeps you up on sheer momentum—romance and adventure galloping side by side across a mythic American horizon. Ron Howard gives the story room to breathe, letting stunning landscapes, bustling immigrant streets, and a thunderous, yearning score do as much storytelling as the dialogue, while Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman sell the dream with combustible chemistry and sincere, scrappy charm. The vibe is earnest and larger-than-life, equal parts starry-eyed and hard-knuckled, with enough grit in the struggle to make the hopeful moments land. If you’re allergic to grand melodrama or accents that lean theatrical, it may not be your cup of tea—but if you want a romantic, visually sumptuous journey that believes in the power of wanting something better, it’s an easy ticket to punch.
Far and Away is clearly aiming for a sweeping, old-school immigrant romance wrapped in a big American frontier adventure, and on a purely visual level it often delivers—wide-open landscapes, period detail, and a sense of scale. The problem is the story plays like a greatest-hits montage of clichés, with characters who feel sketched in rather than lived in, so the emotional beats can land with a thud. The much-mocked Irish accents don’t help, and a few plot turns are so preposterous you may find yourself checking out instead of getting swept up. If you’re in the mood for a glossy, earnest epic and can forgive corniness for spectacle, you might enjoy it; if you want grounded drama or believable romance, this probably isn’t your film.
