The Democratic Terrorist (1992)
The West German security police, Verfassungsschutz, need help to infiltrate a group connected to the Rote Arme Fraktion. The Swedish James Bond, Carl Hamilton, goes to Hamburg, pretending to be a Swedish officer, thrown out of the country after having been exposed as an East German spy. He gets in contact with the terrorists and joins them. Together they are planning to strike against the CIA headquarters in Stockholm.
What people think about The Democratic Terrorist
The Democratic Terrorist is the kind of lean, grown-up action thriller that trusts atmosphere and intelligence as much as gunfire, dropping you into a chilly web of espionage where every conversation feels like it could be a trap. Stellan Skarsgård makes Carl Hamilton riveting to watch—cool, calculating, and human enough that the danger doesn’t feel like a game—while the film keeps the tension simmering with a brisk, purposeful pace. The vibe is distinctly early-’90s European: grounded, morally murky, and more interested in nerves and tradecraft than glossy spectacle. If you want a slick, quippy Bond ride this may feel restrained, but if you’re on the fence and crave a smart, suspenseful undercover story with real stakes, this is an easy recommendation.
The Democratic Terrorist wants to be a slick Cold War-era infiltration thriller, dropping Carl Hamilton into a dangerous game of double identities and international terrorism. The problem is it rarely builds the suspense it’s aiming for, often feeling rushed and oddly flat when it should be tightening the screws. The plot can come off simplified or even confusing in spots, and the uneven execution—right down to some distracting sound work—makes it less gripping than the premise deserves. If you’re mainly here for Hamilton as a stoic operative and you don’t mind a TV-movie vibe, you’ll find a few solid moments, but if you want a tense, polished action-thriller, this probably isn’t your stop.
