Braindead (1992)
When a Sumatran rat-monkey bites Lionel Cosgrove's mother, she's transformed into a zombie and begins killing (and transforming) the entire town while Lionel races to keep things under control.
What people think about Braindead
Braindead is the rare horror-comedy that doesn’t just push the envelope—it feeds it into a lawnmower, and somehow makes the carnage feel like a deliriously joyful party trick. Peter Jackson directs with madcap precision, turning buckets of practical gore and ingenious makeup effects into a kind of slapstick symphony, while the sweet, put-upon sincerity of Timothy Balme’s Lionel gives the mayhem an oddly endearing human center. The vibe is frantic, gross, and gleefully unhinged, with pitch-black humor that keeps escalating until you’re laughing partly out of disbelief. Fair warning: if you’re squeamish or don’t enjoy your comedy drenched in splatter, this will be a hard no—but if you can handle the mess, it’s one of the most inventively outrageous rides the genre has to offer.
Braindead is Peter Jackson trying to make a live-action cartoon of splattery zombie mayhem, pushing practical effects and bad-taste comedy to their absolute limit. If you’re not already on board with nonstop, sticky, body-part slapstick, the joke can start to feel like it’s shouting the same punchline for far too long, turning the finale into endurance rather than escalation. It’s also more gross-out farce than genuinely scary, and some of the sexual material and mean-spirited imagery may land uncomfortably rather than funny. That said, if you enjoy outrageous B-movie energy, inventive gore gags, and a knowingly ridiculous tone, it’s a cult classic for a reason—just don’t expect subtlety or restraint.
