Braindead (1992)

Braindead is the rare horror-comedy that doesn’t just push the envelope—it feeds it into a lawnmower, and somehow makes the carnage feel like a deliriously joyful party trick. Peter Jackson directs with madcap precision, turning buckets of practical gore and ingenious makeup effects into a kind of slapstick symphony, while the sweet, put-upon sincerity of Timothy Balme’s Lionel gives the mayhem an oddly endearing human center. The vibe is frantic, gross, and gleefully unhinged, with pitch-black humor that keeps escalating until you’re laughing partly out of disbelief.
