Batman Returns (1992)

The vibe is operatic and wintry, a dark fantasy with real bite, where corruption and desire slither under every scene without the story ever needing to wink at you. It’s not for viewers wanting a clean, kid-friendly caped adventure, but if you’re up for a stylish, imaginative, slightly unhinged comic-book noir, this one still feels daring.

The violence and sexual innuendo are sharper than you might expect from a “Batman” label, and the whole thing has an idiosyncratic, mean-spirited streak that some viewers find off-putting rather than edgy. That said, Michelle Pfeiffer’s Catwoman is electric, Danny DeVito commits fully to the grotesque, and the atmosphere is so distinctive that if you like dark, stylized Burton worlds, this is one of the purest doses.
