World Apartment Horror (1991)

World Apartment Horror is that rare comedy-horror that feels genuinely inventive, like it’s smuggling sharp social observation into a movie that’s already busy being wildly entertaining. It starts with a simple, pressure-cooker setup—one desperate yakuza underling trying to clear out an apartment building—and then keeps tightening the screws with escalating absurdity, winning performances, and a sly intelligence that makes the laughs land even when the mood turns eerie. Director Katsuhiro Otomo balances the goofy and the unsettling with a confident hand, letting the supernatural creep in without losing the human (and humane) point about prejudice and tolerance. If you want straight scares or a broad, brain-off spoof, this may feel too oddball and pointed—but if you like genre mashups with bite, it’s a cult treat that earns its reputation.

World Apartment Horror is clearly aiming for a quirky mash-up of yakuza workplace comedy and low-rent haunted-house chaos, and on that level it has a certain offbeat charm. The problem is the horror side never really grows teeth, so if you’re expecting genuine scares or escalating dread, you’ll mostly get comedic desperation and a few spooky gestures. Pacing can drag between set pieces, and the murky, dark visuals don’t help the atmosphere so much as make the whole thing feel a bit flat. If you enjoy oddball genre curios and don’t mind the “horror” being more of a garnish than the main course, you may find it amusing; otherwise, it’ll likely feel like a promising idea that never fully lands.
