The Super (1991)
Louie Kritski is a heartless landlord who has been so negligent in keeping up his ghetto apartment that he is threatened with jail time. The judge gives him another option -- he must live in his rat-infested hell hole until he brings it up to liveable standards.
What people think about The Super
The Super is the kind of scrappy, street-level comedy that works because it traps a big personality in a small, miserable space and lets the sparks fly—and Joe Pesci, all kinetic swagger and bruised humanity, makes that confinement feel oddly liberating. Rod Daniel keeps the vibe punchy and rough-edged, mixing hard New York textures with a surprisingly warm current as the building’s daily chaos chips away at a man who’s used to buying his way out of consequences. It’s profane, loud, and sometimes broad in that early-’90s way, but there’s a real pleasure in watching a character who starts out impossible gradually get cornered into decency. If you don’t like your comedies salty and a little mean before they turn tender, it may not be your flavor—but if you do, Pesci alone is a reason to move in for the night.
The Super is clearly trying to do a rough-edged redemption comedy: take a nasty slumlord, trap him in his own building, and force him to learn basic humanity the hard way. The problem is it often can’t decide whether it wants to be a crude, profanity-heavy farce or a heartfelt social-message movie, so the tonal whiplash can feel cynical instead of cathartic. A lot of the tenants come off more like props for the lesson than fully realized people, which makes the “growth” arc feel a bit manufactured and, at times, uncomfortable. If you’re mainly here for Joe Pesci’s abrasive energy and don’t mind a grimy setting and dated attitudes, there are some chuckles and momentum, but if you want warmth, nuance, or a comedy that respects its community characters, this probably isn’t your night.
