Rush (1991)

Rush is one of those undercover-cop dramas that doesn’t just flirt with danger—it drags you into it, close enough to feel the sweat, the paranoia, and the terrible seduction of crossing lines for “the job.” Lili Fini Zanuck directs with a gritty, lived-in authenticity, and Jason Patric and Jennifer Jason Leigh make the central partnership feel frighteningly real as it shifts from professional chemistry to something messier, more intimate, and more combustible. The movie’s power comes from its intensity: the tension isn’t only about catching a kingpin, but about what happens when the cover stops feeling like an act and starts feeling like a life. It’s a tough watch at times, especially with its graphic drug use and raw edge, but if you want a crime drama that hits like a gut-punch and lingers like a bad memory, Rush delivers.

Rush is clearly aiming for a grimy, no-glamour look at undercover work and how the job can poison the people doing it, and that commitment to ugliness is the point. The problem is it can feel more clinical than gripping, with a dour, repetitive spiral that starts to blur together instead of building momentum, and the writing often leans on familiar beats rather than surprising you. If you’re hoping for a propulsive crime thriller or a clever cat-and-mouse takedown, this may come off as humdrum despite the heavy subject matter. Still, Jason Patric and Jennifer Jason Leigh sell the damage, and if you can handle relentless drug use and want a bleak character breakdown more than a satisfying “case” story, it’s worth a look.
