Run (1991)
When a law student accidentally kills the son of a mob boss in a fight, he finds himself relentlessly pursued by the mob and the police.
What people think about Run
Run is the kind of lean, high-octane thriller that grabs you by the collar and doesn’t let go, built around one deliciously cruel twist of fate: one bad night turns an ordinary law student into a moving target. Geoff Burrowes keeps the pace tight and the pressure constant, letting the story ricochet between backroom menace and blue-collar scrappiness as Patrick Dempsey sells both the panic and the grit of a guy improvising his way through a collapsing world. The Atlantic City setting gives it a neon-stained, late-night vibe where every helping hand might be a trap, and Kelly Preston brings a grounded warmth that keeps the film from becoming just a chase machine. If you want a polished, effects-heavy action movie, this isn’t that—but if you’re in the mood for a tense, propulsive cat-and-mouse ride with a gritty early-’90s edge, it’s an easy one to recommend.
Run is clearly trying to be a lean, pedal-to-the-floor chase thriller about an ordinary guy making one disastrous mistake and spending the rest of the movie trying to stay alive. The problem is it often confuses speed with tension, piling on noise and movement instead of giving the premise much depth or believable escalation, so it can feel thin and a bit brainless if you’re hoping for a smarter cat-and-mouse story. Patrick Dempsey is likable enough to keep you watching, and there’s a certain scrappy early-’90s energy to the action, but don’t expect nuanced characters or a thriller that lingers in your head afterward. If you enjoy straightforward, forget-it-by-tomorrow pursuit movies, it’ll do the job; if you want substance, you’ll probably want to run from Run.
