Kevin Costner makes Robin an approachable, earnest center, while Morgan Freeman brings wit and gravity as Azeem, and the movie’s real secret weapon is Alan Rickman’s Sheriff—deliciously wicked, operatic, and impossible to ignore. The tone mixes romantic swashbuckling with a darker edge, so the violence and grim medieval cruelty can hit hard for a PG-13 crowd, but that intensity is part of what gives the story its momentum. If you’re on the fence, this is pure escapist cinema with a strong cast and a villain so entertaining you’ll almost be glad he’s around.
