Love Potion No. 9 is the kind of romantic comedy that remembers the best special effect is charm: it takes a silly fantasy premise and uses it to poke at insecurity, desire, and the ridiculous things we do to feel wanted. Sandra Bullock and Tate Donovan make an endearingly awkward pair, and the movie’s biggest pleasure is watching their confidence inflate like a party balloon—bright, buoyant, and just a little out of control—while the jokes stay breezy instead of mean. Dale Launer keeps the pace snappy, letting the potion-fueled mayhem play like a flirtatious farce with a surprisingly sweet center.
