Emerald City (1988)

Emerald City is that rare comedy-drama that makes you laugh while quietly tightening the screws, a sharp Australian satire that captures the seduction of success with a knowing grin. Its dialogue snaps with energy and wit, and the performances give real human weight to the movie’s bustling world of editors, hustlers, and big-city cynicism—so the jokes land, but so do the consequences. There’s also a delicious undercurrent of Sydney-versus-Melbourne commentary, not as a gimmick but as a lens on identity, ambition, and what people trade away to belong. If you like character-driven stories that poke at the cultural scene and don’t mind a slightly acidic edge, this one still feels brisk, funny, and uncomfortably recognizable.

Emerald City is clearly aiming to be a sharp, funny-yet-sad takedown of big-city ambition and the way creative people get chewed up by the industry. The problem is it often plays like filmed theatre: lots of rapid-fire, message-heavy dialogue and not enough cinematic breathing room, which can make the whole thing feel preachy rather than insightful. Colin is written to be a cautionary figure, but he can come off so self-involved that you may struggle to care what happens to him, even when the story wants your sympathy. If you enjoy talky, satirical character pieces about media and morality, there’s something to admire here, but if you want a more naturalistic, emotionally involving film, this will likely test your patience.
