Dutch (1991)

Dutch is the kind of scruffy, big-hearted road comedy that sneaks up on you: it starts as a clash of class and attitude, then gradually reveals a surprisingly sincere warmth under the bruises and bickering. Ed O’Neill is perfectly cast as a regular guy with more stubborn decency than polish, and his chemistry with Ethan Embry turns their prickly, accident-prone trip into something that feels lived-in rather than manufactured. Director Peter Faiman lets the changing locations do real work, giving the movie a textured, on-the-road vibe where humor comes from discomfort, bad timing, and the little human moments between blowups. It’s not for everyone—some of the early nastiness and PG-13 edge can feel meaner than modern family comedies—but if you like your laughs earned and your sentiment honest, Dutch is an underrated Thanksgiving detour worth taking.

Dutch is clearly aiming for that classic John Hughes-style odd-couple road trip where a rough-around-the-edges adult and a bratty kid grind each other down until something heartfelt breaks through. The problem is the movie leans hard on familiar beats and mean-spirited gags, so the characters can come off less “lovably flawed” and more just unpleasant, with pacing that drifts between sitcom bits and half-serious family drama. Ed O’Neill has a few solid, grounded moments and the premise has enough warmth to work on paper, but the tone never really locks in and the big emotional turns feel a bit prepackaged. If you enjoy messy, sometimes abrasive ’90s comedies and don’t mind a predictable path to reconciliation, you might be fine; if you want sharper writing or characters you actually like spending time with, this probably isn’t for you.
