Double Impact (1991)
Jean Claude Van Damme plays a dual role as Alex and Chad, twins separated at the death of their parents. Chad is raised by a family retainer in Paris, Alex becomes a petty crook in Hong Kong. Seeing a picture of Alex, Chad rejoins him and convinces him that his rival in Hong Kong is also the man who killed their parents. Alex is suspicious of Chad, especially when it comes to his girlfriend.
What people think about Double Impact
Double Impact is the kind of gloriously straight-ahead early-’90s action movie that knows exactly what you came for: Jean-Claude Van Damme, twice over, delivering crisp martial-arts choreography, bruising stunts, and a steady drumbeat of momentum that rarely lets up. The Hong Kong setting adds a slick, neon-edged crime-thriller vibe, while the twin dynamic gives the film a fun jolt of personality—one brother polished, the other rough, both headed toward the same hard-earned catharsis. Director Sheldon Lettich keeps the storytelling lean and the set pieces punchy, building to showdowns that feel satisfyingly physical rather than weightless. It’s not for viewers looking for subtle drama or realism (and it is firmly R-rated for violence and sensuality), but if you want stylish head-kicking entertainment with a pulpy revenge engine, this one hits the spot.
Double Impact is trying to be a pulpy, globe-trotting revenge tale with the fun hook of Van Damme playing two wildly different twins, and it absolutely wants you to cheer more than you think. The problem is the story is thin and the tone wobbles between “dead serious” and “accidentally goofy,” so if you need smart writing, believable drama, or consistent humor, you’ll feel your patience draining. What it does deliver is straightforward early-’90s action: plenty of fights, macho attitude, and a few genuinely entertaining twin-switch moments that lean into the absurdity. If you’re here for high cinema, skip it; if you’re here for Van Damme doing Van Damme things with extra Van Damme, it’s serviceable.
